Car Dealers - Jeep Compass
Fathers of the ‘rustic ride’, Jeep have put their rural heads together and present us with the brand new Compass. A puzzling little car, it has all the traits of an SUV whilst looking suspiciously like a hatch. Confused? Let’s investigate.
Whilst none of the Jeep quality was sacrificed, the performance of the Compass is somewhat less butch than its older brothers. This car was built for the shirt and tie specimen; impressively large, aggressively sounding, but with all the handling of a used Audi. If it’s hard core off-roading you’re after, don’t get more optimistic than your gravel drive. Whilst not abysmal, the Compass won’t excel on the majority of terrains, and is perhaps more Butlins camping than Amazon exploring. Having said that, this motor is certainly reliable enough for a king-size family, and a dream car for those who like their baggage.
Whilst it won’t impress Ray Mears, the Compass is a worthy motor in all the right places. For a smooth and quiet drive (depending on the tarmac), you’ll be hard pushed to find a nicer model than this. We’re not keen on the awkward aesthetics, but it’s a nice facelift to the bulky Commander. Sleek and polished, we have to agree, although the interior could certainly do with a few more Picasso touches. Slightly more compact than other models, you’ll feel safe in this Jeep without feeling out of your depth. The clutched drive, which favours the front wheels, may give you that little bit more control than other monstrous 4×4’s, and the comfy interior feels pleasantly sheltered considering you’re towering over the rest of humanity.
Choose from a lethargic 2.0 or 2.4 litre engine, but what you’ll save on money, you might well gain in boredom. For comfort and quality as well as a dramatic upgrade on looks, steer towards the Grand Cherokee, whose 6.1 litre engine will vastly improve an otherwise sluggish drive. For the slightly pricier but improved SUV, look to the Land Rover free lander 2 or Honda CR-V which have minor advancements, although still not exactly fierce competition.
Oozing practicality, you’re not really going to go wrong with this car. Reliable in all the right places, and with the ample quality Jeep always have to offer, there’s no real bones to pick. As far as SUV’s go, however, make sure do your homework, as the Compass could well point you in the direction of regret. It has to be said; there’s better out there. For real country contenders, the Land Rover Discovery or BMW X5 will make the rugged look effortless, not to mention smoulderingly fashionable.
Perfect for the executive turned explorer on weekends, it will sit between the two nicely. An expensive motor for a relaxed effort, but definitely more fun than that used Audi. Buy this car for toned down exploring and Sunday afternoon cruising, but if you’re going to off-road, consider taking a real Compass.
